A diamond certificate is a passport. Not a guarantee of value, nor proof of ethical sourcing. It is a technical report, issued by an independent laboratory, that describes the physical characteristics of a stone: weight, colour, clarity, and cut. Three laboratories dominate the global market: the GIA (American), the HRD (Belgian), and the IGI (international). Understanding their differences helps you read a certificate without being swayed by a stamp.

This guide details the role of each laboratory, compares their grading methods, and explains when to request a gemological certificate. What is Diamond Certification?

A gemological certificate is not a title of ownership. It is a laboratory report that documents the 4Cs of a diamond: Carat (weight), Color, Clarity, Cut. The laboratory does not certify the market value of the stone, nor its geographic or ethical origin. It simply attests to the measurable characteristics at a given point in time. The report often includes a clarity diagram (inclusion map), a fluorescence grade, and a unique serial number laser-engraved on the girdle of the diamond for stones above 0.3 carat.

The limitations are clear. A certificate does not guarantee that the diamond has not been chemically treated after analysis, nor that it was not cut in a conflict zone. It offers no protection against swap fraud, where a stone is exchanged after certification. For these reasons, a gemological certificate should always be accompanied by a purchase from a trusted retailer and, where possible, a visual inspection by an independent gemologist.

A certificate of authenticity, by contrast, is a commercial document issued by the seller. It attests that the jewellery sold corresponds to the description provided at the time of purchase, covering the metal, stone type, and estimated weight. The Three Major Certification Laboratories

The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has been the world's leading gemological laboratory since 1931. For a natural engagement diamond above 1 carat, the GIA remains the international standard, especially if the stone is intended for future resale or high-end insurance purposes. For a laboratory-grown diamond, IGI has become the de facto reference, with detailed reports that clearly distinguish CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) stones from HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) stones. For an antique diamond or a fancy cut (cushion, pear, marquise), HRD offers unmatched historical expertise, particularly for European-cut stones fashioned before 1950.

When Should You Request a Gemological Certificate?

Thresholds vary depending on the seller and the market. In the United States, a GIA certificate is common from 0.5 carats onwards. In Europe, the threshold often rises to 0.7 carats for diamonds and 1 carat for coloured stones (Emerald, Sapphire, Ruby).
