A diamond is never "just a carat." It is a carat of a certain purity, a certain colour, cut in a certain way, certified or not, mounted or not. Each parameter shifts the price by several thousand dollars.
Carat weight alone says nothing about what lies within the stone. It is the combination of the 4Cs, carat, colour, purity, and cut, that determines the price. Our experience at the counter has taught us that an informed buyer starts by understanding these criteria before looking at size. A 0.80-carat D IF Excellent diamond can be worth more than a 1.00-carat J SI2 Good. Carat weight is only a starting point
A carat measures weight, not value. One carat equals 0.2 grams, or 200 milligrams. It is the universal unit of measurement since 1907, adopted by all gemological laboratories. Yet two one-carat diamonds never carry the same price, simply because they do not share the same optical qualities.
At a gem market, a vendor may present three one-carat diamonds at $3,600, $8,400, and $14,400. The difference comes down to gradations of purity and colour that an untrained eye will not always perceive. The first will likely be an I-J SI2, the second a G-H VS2, the third a D-E VVS1. These letters and numbers are the diamond's precise coordinates within the 4C system, the optical identity of the stone.
The "1 carat" size is a psychological threshold. Prices rise in a non-linear fashion: a 0.95-carat diamond can cost 15 to 20% less than a 1.00-carat of identical quality, with no visible difference on the finger. This is the threshold effect; the market applies a premium to round sizes (0.50 ct, 1.00 ct, 2.00 ct). A buyer willing to consider a 0.92-carat gains in budget without any visual compromise.

Purity measures the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes. A VS2 diamond represents the ideal quality-to-value balance for fine jewellery. The inclusions are invisible to the naked eye, and the price remains accessible. Moving up to VVS1 costs 30 to 50% more for a gain in purity that is imperceptible without magnification. Conversely, stepping down to SI1 can be a smart choice if the inclusions are well positioned, at the periphery, concealed beneath the setting's prongs.
Our gemologists examine each stone individually before setting. A well-chosen SI1, with inclusions at the table edge and low contrast, can rival a poorly chosen VS2 visually. The grade is an indicator, not an absolute verdict. The position, size, and colour of inclusions matter just as much as their quantity.

Diamond cut and brilliance
Cut is the only one of the 4Cs that depends entirely on human craftsmanship. It measures the proportions, symmetry, and polish of the diamond. The GIA assigns a cut grade ranging from Excellent to Poor for round brilliant cut diamonds only. Fancy shapes (princess, emerald, oval, cushion) have no standardized cut grade.
An Excellent cut diamond reflects light optimally: the stone blazes with brilliance, free of dark zones (the bow-tie effect) or light leakage. A Good cut offers acceptable proportions, though less refined. A Fair or Poor cut loses a portion of its brilliance, regardless of its clarity or colour.
The price difference between Excellent and Very Good is 5 to 10%, and between Excellent and Good, 15 to 20%. This is a criterion never to be overlooked: an Excellent G VS2 diamond outshines a D VVS1 Fair. Cut directly influences the visual impact of the stone, whereas FL clarity is only visible under a loupe.
Critical proportions include total depth (ideally 59 to 62.5%), table diameter (ideally 53 to 58%), and crown angle (34 to 35°). A diamond that is too deep appears smaller on the finger for the same carat weight. One that is too shallow lacks fire. The GIA measures these parameters to the nearest micron and incorporates them into the cut grade.
Gemological certification
A gemological certificate from a recognised laboratory (GIA, HRD, IGI) adds $120 to $350 to the price of a one-carat diamond, but it guarantees the accuracy of the 4Cs. An uncertified diamond may be sold one or two grades above its true value. We never set a diamond above 0.50 carat without a certificate from an independent laboratory.
The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the global benchmark. Its certificates detail weight, colour, clarity, cut, proportions, and any treatments. HRD Antwerp (Hoge Raad voor Diamant) is equally recognised, particularly in Europe. The IGI (International Gemological Institute) certifies a greater number of synthetic diamonds and lower-value stones.
A GIA certificate for a 1ct diamond may add $240 to the final price, but it secures the transaction. Without a certificate, you are buying on trust: a seller may describe an SI2 as a VS2, or a J as an H. The price difference between these grades can represent several thousand dollars. A certificate is a safeguard, not an optional extra.
Be wary of certificates from unknown or brand-affiliated laboratories. Some inflate grades to justify a higher price. Only GIA, HRD, and, to a lesser extent, IGI offer rigorous, independent standards.
Fluorescence and its impact on price
Fluorescence is a diamond's reaction to ultraviolet light. Approximately 25 to 35% of natural diamonds exhibit fluorescence, most commonly blue. The GIA classifies it across five levels: None, Faint, Medium, Strong, and Very Strong.
Strong fluorescence can reduce the price of a D-to-F colour diamond by 10 to 15%, as it may create a milky appearance in certain natural lighting conditions. In an I-to-K colour diamond, however, blue fluorescence enhances the perception of whiteness: the stone appears whiter than it truly is. In this case, fluorescence has a neutral or mildly positive effect on price.
Our experience at the counter confirms that fluorescence is overrated as a flaw. A Strong Blue fluorescence diamond in colour H or I often appears just as white as a G with no fluorescence, at a price 5 to 10% lower. This is a smart trade-off for a buyer looking to maximise visible whiteness without paying for a D grade.
Conversely, Very Strong fluorescence on a D-E diamond can create an oily effect in daylight. The GIA always notes the fluorescence level on the certificate; this should be read carefully before purchasing.
Origin and traceability
The geographic origin of a diamond (Botswana, Canada, Australia, Russia) does not affect its intrinsic quality, but some buyers pay a premium for Canadian diamonds or those certified under the Kimberley Process. This premium is in the range of 5 to 10% above the base price.
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), established in 2003, aims to prevent the trade of conflict diamonds. All diamonds sold within the European Union must comply with the KPCS. Some brands go further, guaranteeing mine-to-market traceability, at an additional cost of 5 to 15%.
Canadian diamonds, particularly those mined in the Northwest Territories, benefit from an image of being "ethical" and "sustainable." Their price can be 10% higher for equivalent quality. This is a buyer preference, not a gemological quality criterion; a diamond from Botswana of the same grade is optically identical.

Cut and colour: maximising the brilliance of a 1-carat diamond
The total cost of a 1-carat diamond ring includes the stone and the setting. An 18K gold setting (yellow, white, or rose) typically weighs between 2 and 4 grams for a solitaire ring, representing $180 to $420 in metal at spot price (gold at approximately $72 per gram in 2026). Add the cost of setting, design, and the house margin, and the setting accounts for $600 to $1,800 of the final price.
18K white gold is often rhodium-plated to enhance its whiteness. This surface treatment wears over time and should be renewed every 18 to 24 months. Platinum, by contrast, requires no treatment; it retains its natural grey-white colour. A Platinum setting costs 20 to 30% more than white gold, but it is hypoallergenic and virtually wear-resistant.
For a D-F colour diamond, a white gold or Platinum setting is recommended, as it does not interfere with the whiteness of the stone. For a G-I diamond, 18K yellow gold softens warm undertones and offers an elegant contrast. For a J-K diamond, yellow gold masks any residual yellow tint and creates an impression of superior whiteness.
The setting style also influences the price. A classic prong setting (4 or 6 prongs) costs less than a bezel or pave setting. A Diamond pave around the centre stone adds $360 to $960 depending on the number and quality of the accent stones.
Diamond cut and colour
The shape of the diamond affects the price at equal weight. The round brilliant cut is 15 to 25% more expensive than fancy shapes (princess, cushion, oval, emerald) of identical quality, as it generates more rough material loss during cutting. A rough diamond must lose approximately 50% of its weight to become a round brilliant, compared to 40% for a princess cut.
Fancy shapes therefore offer better carat-per-dollar value. A 1ct cushion cut G VS2 diamond costs approximately $6,600, compared to $7,800 for a round brilliant of the same quality. The difference is significant, and the cushion does not appear "less beautiful"; it is simply a matter of aesthetic preference.
Certain cuts require a higher clarity grade. The Emerald cut, with its large flat facets, reveals inclusions more readily than a round brilliant. An SI1 may go unnoticed in a round brilliant but become visible in an Emerald cut. For this reason, Emerald cut diamonds are often sold at a minimum of VS2, which increases the price.
Modern cuts (radiant, modified cushion, oval) conceal inclusions and colour better than step cuts (emerald, Asscher). A J colour cushion often appears just as white as an H in an Emerald cut. This is a useful optimisation lever for a buyer who wants to maximise visible size without exceeding their budget.
Synthetic versus natural diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds (also known as synthetic diamonds) share the same chemical composition, the same optical properties, and the same hardness as natural diamonds. The only difference lies in their origin: an HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) or CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) reactor, rather than billions of years of geological pressure.
A 1 ct G VS2 Excellent lab-grown diamond is priced at approximately $1,800 to $3,000, compared to $7,800 for a natural stone of equivalent quality. The price difference amounts to 60 to 70%. This gap reflects the geological rarity of natural diamonds, not any optical superiority. Under a loupe, the two are indistinguishable. Only an infrared spectroscope or a microscopic inclusion analysis can tell them apart.
Lab-grown diamonds hold no resale value: their price decreases each year as industrial production accelerates. A natural diamond retains a portion of its value over time, though it should never be considered a financial investment in the strict sense. For an engagement ring or an everyday piece of jewellery, a lab-grown stone offers unbeatable value. For a heritage or symbolic purchase, natural remains the standard.
The GIA also certifies lab-grown diamonds, with the mention "Laboratory-Grown" noted on the certificate. Never purchase a lab-grown stone sold as natural: this constitutes fraud and is a criminal offence. Independent laboratories systematically identify a stone's origin during the certification process.
Trade-offs for optimising price
With a budget of $7,200, you may choose between a 1.00 ct I VS2 Excellent or a 0.80 ct G VVS1 Excellent. The first favours visible size; the second, optical quality. Both are valid choices, depending on whether you prioritise visual impact (size) or loupe-clean purity (grade).

The same 1 ct G VS2 Excellent Diamond can be sold for $6,800 at an Antwerp diamond wholesaler, $8,500 at a city-centre jeweller, and $11,000 at a prestigious maison on the Place Vendôme. This variation reflects overheads, brand positioning, and associated services such as warranty, after-sales support, and customisation.
Purchasing directly in Antwerp or Tel Aviv is not always advantageous for a private buyer: wholesalers often sell without certificates, or with certificates from less rigorous laboratories, and after-sales guarantees are non-existent. A 15% saving at the time of purchase can quickly become a loss if the stone is poorly graded or if an issue arises after setting.
